Alternative Funk Band Breathing Space Releases Single “makeitaboutu”
Alternative-funk band Breathing Space released their second single of 2022, “makeitaboutu”, on March 25th. With a bouncy, bluesy vibe and alluring vocal arrangements, “makeitaboutu” leaves you with a feeling comparable to that of being wine-drunk.
Breathing Space first formed in 2018, when Maura Dooley and Emiliano Salinas had an impromptu jam sesh together. From then on, the two continued to collaborate -forming the indie-funk-pop mashup band that has now garnered over two thousands monthly listeners on Spotify. In 2020, Gabriel Noland was welcomed into the duo -solidifying the band’s overall sound with his talent on guitar and bass. As explained by Breathing Space, the band’s sound is characterized by Maura Dooley’s “bluesy vocal style”; they utilize lo-fi textures and nostalgic progressions to create intimate soundscapes for their listeners.
The Houston-based band describes their single as “the kind of song someone remembers you for putting them onto it. It’s a fun and bouncy song that completely discards any prior sense of what Breathing Space’s sound is”. Breathing Space plays with jazz elements, combining them flawlessly with indie-pop influences. It’s the kind of song you could dance for hours to and not even notice it’s on repeat. The vintage-y feel is reminiscent of 80’s R&B/Soul band Chemise and their single “Give Me Love”.
There, however, must be an honorable mention to lead singer Maura Dooley. With sultry, soft vocals and a presence to match, Dooley could have easily been an icon of the 80’s. Salinas and Noland match her energy perfectly, keeping the vibe of the track consistent from start to finish.
You can keep up with Breathing Space and their upcoming projects on streaming platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube.
