A Parent’s Love Shines In Tommy Ashby’s ‘My Old Man’
Our parents are a big part of who we are. From our facial features, talents, attitudes and so much more. There’s a lot of them within us than we’d like to admit. In fact, we can also say that without them we won’t be here now. Not just because they created us, but through their love, care, and wisdom.
This same air of fondness and homage for our folks is felt in Scottish artist Tommy Ashby’s latest song ‘My Old Man’. Released April 19th in all major streaming platforms all over. ‘My Old Man’ is a track that speaks of his father and his greatness. Along with that is his greatness and the lofty expectations of walking in his footsteps. A love letter from son to father, it’s a gentle lullaby that says “I love you” in every turn.
With a voice so calming and passionate coupled with instrumentals comparable to a sweet lullaby. Tommy Ashby paints us a stunning picture of his dad or his ‘old man’. He starts off with the lines “My old man’s tall as a tree. When he talks it sounds so deep. His stride spans two miles, he rebuilds the fragile.”. Giving us the idea that he’s a giant with a big heart, and hands that nurture. Later on it is revealed that much like we do when in nature, we lean on trees for refuge “Oh I’m not afraid of the dark. When it’s midnight, I’m in full flight. Oh I’m not afraid of the dark no more.”. Ahh the feels! Aside from that, there’s this sincerity that’s present in every word. We might not be the ‘old man’ but his message of admiration and affection pierces through our hearts.
Amidst all this, there’s this small voice that whispers “I try to walk in his shoes. They weight too much to move. But my feet just fall out.”. A pain to hear yes, but if you stop and analyze it a bit. You will come to notice that in a way, it’s also a silent admittance that his ‘old man’ is irreplaceable. He will always want, need and love him till his dying breath – “It casts a long shadow. That lasts all my life.”.
