Hooked Like Helen knows how to create music with messages that matter — and with explosive rock energy. In “OCD (these thoughts again),” released today, the alternative band reveals intimate insights into what it’s like living with the condition. Husband-wife-duo Jon and Nikki Stipp get vulnerable about OCD symptoms, such as intrusive thoughts, obsessive rumination, and compulsions.
“Mental Health Awareness is one of the most important platforms for us as a band. This track is meant to be both a conversation starter and a 3-minute and 10-second bit of relief for our fans who struggle mentally and emotionally. We write our songs from our own experiences in an attempt to help heal ourselves and others.”
~ Nikki Stipp
This recent release features indie-rock and modern post-grunge stylings. And, like any Hooked Like Helen track, the energy is over the top. HLH is a masterclass in dynamic, anthemic tracks. “OCD (these thoughts again)” brims with raw passion for a cathartic, edgy listen.
Co-produced by Nikki Stipp and Kevin McCombs (Teenage Wrist, Papa Roach, Royal & The Serpent), “OCD (these thoughts again)” is reminiscent of HLH’s pop work but dives deeper and darker in powerful ways. The single’s ability to be catchy and engaging while conveying the ongoing pain of navigating mental illness is remarkable. The track evolves into screaming “Again and again and again and again,” underscoring the repetitive torment of OCD.
Again and again and again and again
Again and again and again and again
Like a wind up clock
I’m ticking and tocking
I’m spinning, slipping
I can’t stop
~ “OCD (these thoughts again)”
Hooked Like Helen centers itself as a community of healing, sharing music with themes like childhood trauma and addiction. Nikki is 11 years sober herself, so the band sets forth messages of encouragement, resilience, and inspiration.
With songs and scores under its belt for major productions like E!, MTV, and Netflix, it’s clear Hooked Like Helen is a name to watch out for. For HLH, 2023 was a big touring year. With a reputation for electrifying stage presence, HLH toured with Icon For Hire and No Resolve/Halocene; opened for Jewel, Taylor Hicks, and Blood, Sweat & Tears; and directly supported PVRIS at Sandusky Pride.
