Exclusive Premiere: Leah Lawson’s revealing new video for her song “Cheaper Kind”

Hailing from the eclectic and creative town of Asheville in North Carolina, indie-folk singer Leah Lawson’s music reflects a sense of deep release and nostalgia for the past. Take her soft, indie track “Cheaper Kind.” Growing up homeschooled in Florida, Lawson’s entire world was built on the conservative evangelical community in which she lived. Living in a time she dubs “purity culture’s hay-day,” she was left with deep marks on her life after resisting the restrictions put on her, ones she’s still working to heal. Dedicating the acoustic-rooted “Cheaper Kind” to her struggles, she said the song “was the start of my journey toward personal, spiritual, and religious freedom.”

“It was the first time I was really able to say out loud, “Hey this is hurting me and it has been for a long time.” Recorded at Way Out Studios in Seattle, Washington, and produced by Trevor Spencer (Beach House, Father John Misty, Fleet Foxes), the expertly recorded track is an honest exploration of Lawson’s conservative upbringing. With smooth guitar framing her clear and steady vocals, she delves into the cracks of the scars she has left: delicate, revealing, and powerful all the same.

“Cheaper Kind” comes in anticipation of Lawson’s latest LP Flood House coming out on September 16 of this year. The honest track is also accompanied by a newly produced and equally intimate music video crafted by Lawson and fellow collaborators Kayla Naas and Matthew Marshall. In addition to this latest project, Lawson has many more songs released on various streaming platforms, having been crafting her signature vulnerable and revealing tracks since 2015.

Often having her intimate sound likened to the works of Julien Baker and Leith Ross, the burgeoning artist has much more in store for her future orignal projects. Keep up with Lawson on her website for more from her and watch the brand new video for her revealing song “Cheaper Kind” below!
