Catalan-born Latin pop singer ROSALÍA is notably known in the States for her remix of The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” and her collaboration with Travis Scott on the track “(TKN).” However her lovely voice is a perfect match for a song with indie-pop star Billie Eilish, as both have soulful, heart-wrenching singing styles. “Lo Vas A Oldivar” showcases both singers’ differing vocal ranges in a hauntingly beautiful collaboration for the HBO series Euphoria.
Some autotune on ROSALÍA‘s and Eilish‘s voice in the bridge of the track adds a unique flare that is fresh and absolutely stunning. Bare of many instrumentals, “Lo Vas A Oldivar” is mainly composed of poetic a Capella vocals and minimal enchanting synth sounds. The song speaks in both English and Catalan (the historic dialect of the Catalan region in Spain, of which Barcelona is the capital). “Lo Vas A Oldivar” is truly an artistic piece, breaking barriers of songwriting perhaps expected from Billie. I’d say Billie is always keeping people on their toes, and this collaboration is yet another example of how talented and creative she can be with her music.
The music video for “Lo Vas A Olvidar,” which translates to “You Will Forget,” perfectly matches the ambiance of the song. It seems to be set in a nightmare-esque dark space, which closely resembles the underworld of Stranger Things “The Upside Down.” Only a single spotlight shines on both Billie and ROSALÍA as they work through the painful emotions evoked in this song. Billie brings the song to a close with a powerful quote: “You say it to me like it’s something I have any choice in… if I wasn’t important then why would you waste all your poison…” and the video fades to black.
