On December 9, Poughkeepsie-based indie-pop band, yarn. released their debut EP, I Said Goodbye and Then, on all streaming platforms.

This ethereal seven-track EP embodies a psychedelic sound and smooth melody. Accompanied by lyrics that describe the transitional period of life after college, the project shines a light on the vulnerabilities of endings and beginnings. Each of the seven tracks from this project came together effortlessly during the band’s jam sessions. According to lead singer Sophia Calder, they wanted “this project to showcase the complexities in goodbyes from how hard it can be to what beautiful things can come out of it.”

Even from a peripheral listening, “I Said and Goodbye and Then” is a marriage of intrinsic exploration and extrinsic musical catharsis. Each track explores a different aspect of struggle or wonderment at the difficulties post college experiences, whether that be in relationships or finding one’s own identity after a tumultuous period of rushed growth. Each lyrical reflection is supported by a hypnotizing instrumental accompaniment, featuring guitarists Liam Manion and Sawyer Bush, drummer Miles Schulman, and bassist Eden Forbes, all of whom lend their musical prowess to buoy Sophia’s wistful vocals.

yarn. was formed on the Vassar College campus during the autumn of 2020. With Covid-19 still at its peak, they practiced outside and wrote most of their music in parking lots, on bleachers, and frequently at the Observatory. After the success of their single “Pretty Girls” in April, the band went on a small tour in the northeast and packed out their first show at Higher Ground in Vermont. yarn.s’ music has caught the attention of prolific blogs such as Wolf in a Suit, BuffaBlog, EveryWave Blog, and American Pancake.

Listen to yarn.’s “I Said Goodbye and Then” now on Spotify.
