What it Means to be a “Hero”

Featured in Fresh Finds and New Music Friday, Clara Lars proves that she has staying power in this industry. “Hero,” the focus track found in her debut EP Illusions, was written by Lars and produced by her and Chris Coady (Beach House). The single features her unique and dreamy alt pop sound and showcases her skill in writing lyrics that resonate well beyond her 16 years.

Lars’ deeply personal lyrics draw inspiration from her journals and life experiences.  After growing up in Brooklyn, her family made a cross-country move to Los Angeles when she was ten years old.  Struggling to find her footing in a new city and at a new school, Lars’ sat at the piano and escaped into music.  In 2020, Lars set up a studio in the basement of her home where she learned how to produce her own music, and through this, she found the process of writing to be both confessional and observational. She plans to continue creating for the years to come.

“Hero” is beautifully transparent when speaking on the fact that no one will continuously have perfect days. This is particularly seen in a line spoken by Lars, being “heroes pretend they’re fine… put on a strong face all the time.” This is not the main message, however, as the song also makes the point that true ‘heroes’ never let their ideals slip past them. Hesitating is the worst thing a hero could do; they stand tall and proud, and talk clear and loud. They’re sure of themselves, and by being confident, a hero spreads that confidence to others. Although such a task is difficult, and many days may lead to these tasks not being fully met, these are important attitudes to have when interacting in the day-to-day. Definitely, I’d say, if you’re looking for a song with a meaningful message, than this is the one for you.
