Doechii Does Not Disappoint with First Single of the Year “What It Is (Block Boy)” Featuring Kodak Black

Fresh off of a breakout year of her career, Doechii released “What It Is (Block Boy),” featuring Kodak Black, as her first single of 2023. Released in March via Top Dawg and Capitol Records, the collaboration shows off Doechii’s vocal range and maintains a spunky back and forth between her and Kodak Black.

The song opens to instrumentals with an attitude, drawing in the listener and establishing a tone within the first few bars. Doechii’s personality dominates the track, and the backup vocals in the chorus seem to be cheering her on. They respond to the call made by Doechii in the undeniably catchy verse, where she is singing over a bouncy tune and brisk piano.

“Every good girl needs a little thug, every block boy needs a little love”

Grammy nominated rapper and fellow Floridain joins Doechii, and builds upon her authentic lyrics. The back-and-forth of the collaborators is as sweet as it is gritty, characterized by unbalanced devotion. The vibe of the relationship calls back to a nineties kind of sound, which was an important choice for Doechii while writing the track.

“This song is a fusion of nostalgia and pop vibesI feel like I’m showing off a side of my vocal range with this one that my fans haven’t really seen yet. I love using the old samples of “No Scrubs” and “Some Cut” to mix in some playful energy as well.

Doechii

Doechii took over in 2022 with hits such as “Stressed,” “Crazy,” “Persuasive (ft. SZA)” and more. She has been recognized by the industry for her achievements with a nomination for Push Performance of the Year at the 2022 MTV VMAs and Best New Artist at the 2022 Soul Train Music Awards. This comes as no surprise after the rising star quickly cemented her place within hip hop’s exciting stars with the shamelessly individual EP Oh the Places You’ll Go (2020), featuring Doechii’s viral smash “Yucky Blucky Fruitcake.”

Crowned “Queer Game-Changer” by Billboard, Doechii begins an exciting new era with “What It Is (Block Boy).” Keep up with Doechii here, and check out “What It Is (Block Boy)” featuring Kodak Black below.
