Tyler Bernhardt’s “I Was Stoned” Is The Perfect Rainy Day Listen
Indie-rock artist Tyler Bernhardt’s single, “I Was Stoned”, was released on April 3rd, marking his first release of 2022. The song presages his newest album, “Makeshift Troubadour”, which was released the following month on June 6th.
Bernhardt describes himself as a “multi-instrumentalist”, utilizing his many musical talents to create heartfelt, unique tracks that reflect his own personal experiences throughout his life. The singer, songwriter, and producer isn’t afraid to play around with a litany of emotions. Through his musicality, Bernhardt manages to capture the complexities of human emotions and their ability to blend together. The artist draws inspiration for his music from a wide range of influences. He explained that his “aesthetic and conception combines disparate elements, from captivating raw energy to elevated moods, all timeless qualities innate to his brand of music”.

“I Was Stoned” is centered around the topic of addiction and its damaging effects on not only your physical health, but your mental and emotional health as well. The song examines how we see ourselves through ‘clear eyes’ after the effects of substance abuse fade away. Bernhardt explains, “It’s about you seeing yourself. How “clear thoughts” can be seen through by a later eye. It’s about addiction, it’s about loneliness, it’s about whatever you feel when you hear it. It listens to you when you listen to it”.
The track itself is deeply layered, gradually becoming more and more complex as the song progresses. It begins slowly, featuring melancholic vocals and plucky acoustics. However, as the song continues on, the energy rises with an almost orchestral intensity. Like rain, “I Was Stoned” begins slowly and softly -until it gradually becomes a roaring storm.
