Music itself is a spiritual experience. Sound stimulates our brains in a manner that unlocks a world of power to shape or define a mood or experience. Artists pay mindful attention to the atmosphere of their music, because it influences the atmosphere of their audience. Some take it even further, infusing their music with high vibrational frequencies that brings listening to the next level. Producing their music in a specific frequency not only impacts the listener’s brain differently, but it establishes a high bar of intention in music making, valuing how a person experiences their work.

The most common frequency that musicians toy with is 432 hertz, a highly meditative and healing frequency that encourages a feeling of peace and content. R&b artists and rappers often incorporate this frequency into their music, and it has been mastered by Jazz, Reggae, and Soul musicians as well. Other methods, like Tibetan song bowls, have also become more popular as people increasingly recognize music’s role in the law of attraction and how we perceive the world. You can also listen to raw frequencies in the background of your day or night as a self care practice, or find conversions on youtube of your favorite songs set to a specific frequency.

SZA, queen of lyrics both genius and relatable, uses Tibetan song bowls in certain tracks on her celebrated record CTRL. The soulful, resonant aura of each song is is able to come through so powerfully because of these. They create an opening of sorts, both bellowing and soft, like a cradle for the rest of the song’s elements. The tune is incredibly soothing, a feeling which becomes connected to listening to SZA’s music, perpetuating a bond with the artist and a more positive listening experience. In “The Weekend,” one of her most popular songs, the synth is set to 625 hertz, a frequency that has been linked to healing and pain relief. SZA’s lyrics are a cathartic release in themselves, so it is clear she is in tune with the perspective of what she is putting out.
Erykah Badu is very well known for her frequency work. In a video for Vogue, she shares all the different sonic tools that live in her idyllic studio and aid her in making funky, innovative melodies. Jhené Aiko has been transparent about her album Trip, how she recorded it as a spiritual journey to cope with her brother’s passing. She is working to take this even furhter, utilizing crystal alchemy bowls on Chilombo. Aiko utilizes the bowls for their healing properties, striking the bowl at a specific note to connect with a specific chakra. She tunes much of the album to D, which stimulates sensuality and douses the listener in the emotion she is singing about. Aiko is a perfect example of how immersing in sound can transform the mind, creating a very strong link between mind, body, and soul.

Duke Ellington, a remarkable Jazz musician, worked with frequencies in his music as well. Notably, Ellington had a unique form of Synesthesia called Chromesthesia, where colors are audible in the same way one can hear a sound, and sounds can be witnessed as a color. Knowing this, it is creatively fascinating but no surprise that Ellington used frequencies. He had a unique relationship with sound, which he used to his advantage to produce music with a richness that is impossible to replicate.

One of the best, easiest ways to incorporate frequencies into your life is by playing them as you sleep. On both Youtube and Spotify, videos and records spanning many, many hours long cover every frequency you can imagine. They can be put on a loop, turned down to a reasonable volume, and are sure to lull you right to bed. Not only does raising your vibration help you get to sleep, but it impacts Delta waves while you doze. During your most relaxed state, the frequency is able to seep the designated benefits into your body by rewiring neural pathways, vitalizing the mind all night to wake up feeling your best. During the day, mid frequency tones can be used to ease anxiety, because these are heard by the middle ear, which communicates a sense of safety to the nervous system. The possibilities are endless!
