When Quavo and Lana Del Rey teamed up for their hit “Tough” earlier this year, the track was bound to be a hit. The Grammy-nominated artists’ collaboration blended each of their best qualities as trap and alternative powerhouses with a country flair. Just a few days before the single’s release, West Coast DJ and producer Channel Tres released his album Head Rush. Now he has utilized his innovative and versatile production style to reimagine the country-trap anthem on his new remix of the track.
When compared to the laid back feeling of the original track, the remix stands out as a frenetic, club-ready banger. Channel Tres’ interpretation of the track moves away from the lyrical focus of the original. Quavo’s vocals are heavily chopped and processed, and Del Rey’s are cut down to only the word “Tough”. Instead of allowing the vocals to occupy the same amount of space on the remix, he chooses to splice them to uplift his skillset.
This decision allows Channel Tres’ funky, energetic production to take center stage. While the original’s sound had a distinct twang, he offsets these themes on the remix by pushing deep-house chord stabs to the forefront of the listening experience. A pumping four-on-the-floor bassline anchors the track, allowing these sharp synths to create an infectious sonic atmosphere for listeners.
The track is also distinctly digital, straying away from the song’s original acoustic foundation. The more decorative synth lines have an electronic-brightness that puts the track on a different end of the sonic spectrum than the “Tough” that could be heard anywhere at any time during the summer of 2024.
It’s these deep-house production elements that give the track an immediacy that sucks you in and forces you to dance. With sounds like these that are tailor-made to make you move, the “Tough – Channel Tres Remix” is poised to dominate DJ rotations everywhere.
