Bright piano paired with darker guitar and strings makes an enchanting introduction to Tom A. Smith’s newest indie pop-rock hit. “Fading Away,” released Friday, is the anthem for all who feel lost and are searching for answers.
I’m drifting out, I’m losing sight
I’m getting further away
A telescope might give me hope
There’s something there
To come and rescue me
~ “Fading Away”
Audio clips of a spaceship lifting off throughout the song unify Smith’s galactic imagery in this otherworldly track. His raspy vocals brim with passion and power, creating an irresistible atmosphere. “Fading Away” is a fulfilling listen that resonates with those facing existential anxiety; each artistic voice crack is a testament to Smith’s ability to radiate raw emotion.
Building on the space theme, “Fading Away” showcases an adorable music video featuring childhood clips of Smith. Seeing Smith at 9 years old decked out in full astronaut gear adds a layer of charm with its nostalgia and glimpse into the musician’s past.
I love space and think the whole thing had a classic vibe. The double meaning of the lyrics and everything works really well for me. To get Hugo White (The Maccabees) to produce it was fate I think. I think he’s a genius and it was such an enjoyable process. It stays really faithful to the original demo but as soon as he got his hands on it, it became massive.

The track was a dream to make, Smith said. Everything flowed so well that Smith and his team finished the song in less than five hours.
The eighteen-year-old has a series of successes under his belt, including performing at Glastonbury before he even started secondary school. With praise from big names like Elton John and Jack Saunders, Smith is a rising star. He released EP3 this summer, and now he’s taking the stage in both support and solo shows in the U.K. Check tour dates here.
