Syd Barrett led the legendary band Pink Floyd until his departure from the group in 1968. He helped steer the musical scene he was in toward its late 60’s style. His solo work exists as a mythical yet wondrous output, earning a cult following over the past fifty years. The mixture of folk and psychedelics oozes from his music, beautifully and soulfully produced.
Barrett’s first album, The Madcap Laughs, released January 1970, is known as his best solo effort. Standouts like “Octopus,” a whimsically charming track, shine at their brightest on the golden-haired vinyl. It has a full, rich sound, recorded at Abbey Road Studios with the help of former Floyd bandmates David Gilmour and Roger Waters. Later that same year Barrett came out, calling on the same studio and musical partners. The record, on a pale lemonade-colored vinyl, features gems such as “Gigolo Aunt,” and of course, “Baby Lemonade.” Barrett’s 1988 Opel is full of unreleased material and outtakes from the late sixties, filling in the blanks of his two previous albums. This vinyl is opal, reminiscent of the milky way as he digs into the vault.
Check out the albums and order here by midnight on July 31st to guarantee yourself a copy of Syd Barrett’s critical solo collection.
