Tennis Dazzle with “Let’s Make a Mistake Tonight”

Looking for a groovy synth pop tune that will leave you gently swaying? Then look no further than Tennis’ “Let’s Make a Mistake Tonight”. Tennis released the music video for “Let’s Make a Mistake Tonight” shortly before their newest album, Pollen hit streaming services. The pop duo plan on going on tour in late March in support of their album.

Tennis is a band that consists of husband and wife, Patrick Riley and Alaina Moore. The two had initially met while attending the University of Colorado, whilst attending a philosophy class. The formation of the band would come around post-graduation, following a sailing trip that they both went on. The duo would write songs about their experiences on their trip, which would culminate into them deciding to pursue music full time. Since the formation of Tennis in 2010, the two have released a total of six studio albums, with the latest being this year’s Pollen.

“Let’s Make a Mistake Tonight” consists of luscious synths. It is similar in tone to their previous release, “One Night with the Valet”, except the newer song is a bit more upbeat. Whereas “One Night with the Valet” will leave you transfixed in its shimmering beauty, “Let’s Make a Mistake Tonight” will have you gently moving from side to side. The lyrics urge the listener to explore and take risks. To take the risk of making a mistake, that only by taking chances can they discover something new and exciting.

The music video focuses primarily on Alaina Moore, as she dances in a shimmeringly bright silver dress. As she does the background around her changes, we get monochrome backgrounds of black and purple, of floating pianos and of Moore sitting near massive piano keys. The music video is shot simply and in a minimalistic style.

“‘Let’s Make a Mistake Tonight’ is all hubris, attitude, and wish fulfillment. I’m turning water into wine. I’m reshaping my reality through projection or denial. While tracking with Patrick I kept envisioning the same scene: I’m in the passenger’s seat. Patrick drives with one hand on the wheel and one on my thigh. This song plays us out.”
