Start The New Year Getting “Vulnerable” with Kayden McCarthy

It can be hard to put oneself out there and be open when dating or even in relationships in general. This vulnerability, or difficulty of being vulnerable, is explored in Kayden McCarthy’s latest single, “Vulnerable,” based on the artist’s past relationships. Its slow tempo and integration of bass create a sexy atmosphere, meshing well with the song’s overall themes.

Listen to “Vulnerable” below:

The song begins with a back-and-forth between the plucking of the bass guitar and the electric guitar until the drop at the beginning of the chorus leads to a more instrumental-heavy section. There are also backing vocals taken up a notch with vocal effects. The overall production of the hook helps the song flow and creates a fun dynamic that is great to groove and listen to.

Another interesting aspect of the track is McCarthy’s vocal performance, as his tone has a slight country twang, adding a unique twist. McCarthy’s voice has an attitude that is emphasized, especially during the chorus, as he sings, “I wish I was vulnerable/ So quick to be criminal/ I’ve been drinking miserable/ She wanted me vulnerable.” The lyrics and how McCarthy sings them reflect how he dodged opening up with past romantic partners.

Based in Chicago, Kayden McCarthy’s music is inspired by late 90’s rock and early 2000’s hip-hop mixed with modern-day electro-pop. His music career began with the release of his first single in 2018, “Need You Like I Do,” followed by his first album, Amsterdam, in 2019. Since then, McCarthy has released quite a few singles, along with the EP Neverland, and two more albums, Covers in 2019 (a collection of songs he has covered) and Overboard in 2022.
