Summer may be over and leaf-peeping may be at its peak, but that doesn’t mean the summertime vibes have to stop and Jack Dawkins certainly isn’t one to succumb to fall time just yet. The Boulder-based rap-scene newcomer released his first single, “Spread Love,” earlier this month and it’s a summer anthem about living life with a sense of joy and gratitude, but really can be enjoyed at any point of the year.
Jack Dawkins raps because he loves to tell stories. His use of the English language has been compared to Michael Phelps’ performance on Saturday Night Live: wildly entertaining for none of the reasons you would expect. He is, at his core and in his music, deeply human and a lover of excessive comma use. Though his hip-hop knowledge and admiration are strong, it is the possibility of weaving a narrative and emotionally connecting to others that motivates him to write like he’s running out of time and appreciating the moment he’s in now.
“Spread Love” fits with his persona – he has a huge heart and doesn’t care if people think that’s soft or cliche. The lyrics of the track are playful and the melody is infectious. He brings an early 2010’s hip-hop vibe to his track with his spirited rap style backed by funky instrumentals. With a toss of trumpet horns and consistent piano keys, the backing track will undoubtedly put a smile on your face as you get your head bobbing. The lyrics match the warmth of the production and the intent of the track shines through like rays of sun. This song was made to be blasted from car windows, so soak it up while you still can before it gets too cold to do so.
