Sam Smith Celebrates Self-Love and Self-Acceptance In New Single, “Love Me More”

Sam Smith and their iconic voice are back again with “Love Me More”, a song dedicated to the journey of self-love. This journey of self-love is an important theme, as Sam explains how their own journey inspired “Love Me More,”

“I felt like that for the longest time and slowly I’m learning how to just be nice to myself. I wanted to share that because I captured it in this song. Over the last two years, music has been my therapy more than ever. So I hope this song can be your friend.”

“Love Me More” starts with just an instrumental and Sam’s voice, until the pre-chorus when the beat joins in. The musical composition remains simple throughout the song, allowing Sam’s voice and harmonies to shine. It also brings the lyrics to the forefront of the listener’s attention, as Sam describes the lessons they learned in self-acceptance. With lyrics such as, “I used to cry myself to sleep at night/ I’d blame the sky when the mess was in my mind,” and “So I sat with sorrow/ And eventually it set me free,” Sam shows that the road to where they’re at now was long and difficult, but they are finally in a better place now.

The accompanying music video encapsulates the overall theme and vibe of “Love Me More” perfectly. It begins with alternating clips of home videos of Sam as a kid and more current scenes of them performing. Then, it turns to a black and white shot in an apartment, while a voicemail encourages Sam to go out dancing that night as the instrumental plays in the background. After the voicemail cuts off, the viewer watches Sam sit pensively while sipping their tea. As Sam begins singing, the shot turns to color, and they leave their apartment to head out for the night. This alternates with Sam alone in a dark room, spotlight shining directly on them as they sing. When they make it to the club, Sam gets ready in a dressing room, before heading out to the dance floor. The entire video emits a calm happiness that makes the viewer share this experience of contentment with Sam.

As Sam states,

“I wrote this song for anyone who feels different, anyone who has to stop themselves every day from saying unkind things to themselves, in their head, all the time.”
