Sally Han Drops Her Awaited Debut EP, featuring “One Last Time”
Sally Han made her debut with “One Last Time” as the title track. A New Zealand talent in the Korean R&B and pop scene, Han shares her participation and involvement in making the song; the bass, writing and production all share a touch of Han’s color.
“One Last Time” has a very dreamy beginning. With soft and airy vocals that ascend into falsettos, the melody simply floats. The entrance of bass and drums instantly grounds the song and simultaneously gives it a funky sound.
The lyrics are all about being in the mood for love. For Han, this means both the good parts and the less appealing parts, like becoming possessive or jealous. Her vocals make it so easy for listeners to immerse themselves in that feeling of haze and infatuation.
Say I’m the only one
Is it true, I don’t mind if you’re lying to me
Baby, a little jealousy
– “One Last Time”
Sally Han’s EP is titled Planet Sarang, the English romanization of the Korean word love. The cute name references her experiences growing up, especially her frequent trips between Korea and New Zealand. Her time in both countries shaped her sound and ambition within the R&B genre. As for her musical background, she gravitated towards the acoustic and electric guitar, drums and piano from a young age, mastering one by one. She further explored fine art, played for her church band and continued experimenting with music. So, in many ways, this album comes from love, inspiration and sometimes a combination of the two.
She was always surrounded by creative musicians and performers, and growing up in church exposed her to many talented musicians as a young kid. By high school, she was playing the bass guitar proficiently, which led her to being involved in many jazz bands, receiving awards such as “Most Outstanding Young Musician” and “Best Bassist” award at the national jazz competitions. Theater, choir, jazz gigs, and piano competitions, and playing as a church musician – All of these performing experiences that she grew up with, sharpened her skills and provided a strong foundation for her musical career.
The music video for “One Last Time” is set to drop on June 7, with an aesthetic as dreamy as Sally Han herself. Though there are no announcements for tour dates or releases, fans are sure that there is much to come for the musician and they simply cannot wait.
