On September 24th, Run The Jewels released the deluxe version of their 2020 album, RTJ4. To preface the release of the deluxe album, Killer Mike and El-P put out the Lil Wayne remix of the hit track, “ooh la la.” “ooh la la” was one of the songs of the summer for 2020, and Lil Wayne’s verse on the remix adds a flair that the original wasn’t lacking but is better for all the same.
“ooh la la” as a song is just phenomenal. Killer Mike and El-P work with DJ Premier to create a “modern throwback classic,” one that explores themes of racial injustice, Batman, and the overthrow of society. One might think a song that covers such heavy topics would be a little down or somber, but “ooh la la” brings the heat and the energy all the way through. The Lil Wayne remix just adds some Lil Wayne at the start of the song.
Whether that’s a good or a bad thing depends on you as a listener, but I’m firmly of the belief that Lil Wayne brings his best work to his features (see: “Droppin’ Seeds” and “HOT WIND BLOWS” for Tyler, the Creator). This “ooh la la” remix is no exception to that rule. Lil Wayne, propelled forward by the beat set by DJ Premier, El-P, and Killer Mike, brings just as much heat as the full members of Run The Jewels. This is a case where the remix is on par with the original.
