Poppy’s “So Mean” Shares A Look Into Her Tim Burton Live Show World

Post-genre phenom, Poppy, released the latest single toward her upcoming full-length project, Flux. “So Mean” arrived with a music video to match worthy of all the Tim Burton dark fantasy pastel landscapes we could’ve asked for.

Fun and lighthearted instrumentals contrast the darker content that lies within. The self-directed video showcases Poppy and her live band performing in the confines of a tiny house as she dances around in a contrasting pink dress.

“So Mean” takes on a new direction from Poppy’s I Disagree era. Rather than honing in on the heavy metal tones, the track embodies edges of pop more similar to her roots as a musician. But rather than sticking to the purely bubblegum sound in the first era of Poppy, lying within the lyrics, a darker message lingers.

Throughout the track, Poppy alludes to the battle within her head and heart, the weight of waking up and facing each and every day; and it’s all over a toxic connection to a person she sings about. “Love me when I’m under your spell/Hate me when I’m giving you hell,” she sings in her signature lilting tones. The track then processes through losing oneself in that kind of toxicity, that bleeds the life out of those who are involved.

“She couldn’t ever feel a thing/She couldn’t hear herself think/Now she hates everything/How did she get here?/How did she get so mean?/She couldn’t ever feel a thing/She couldn’t hear herself think/Now she hates everything/How did she get here?”

Poppy’s set to release her next full length, Flux, on September 24th. Stay tuned for more updates, and stream the new single below:
