Phillip LaRue’s “Never Break” Evokes Emotional Waves

Music expresses an array of emotions, from happiness to sadness, from joy to sorrow, and Phillip LaRue’s latest single, “Never Break,” perfectly shows this expression. Inspired by LaRue’s wife, June, when she was missing her hometown in Central California, LaRue’s raw emotional vocals combined with the acoustic guitar evokes a sad longing but also a hopeful feeling in the listener.

Phillip LaRue is well-known for his poetic and emotional lyricism, which is fully displayed in “Never Break.” In this particular track, LaRue states that,

“It plays off the metaphor of waves. We’re making a wave together that never breaks,”

Listen to “Never Break” below:

The song begins with LaRue’s vocals and the plucking of the acoustic guitar, eventually joined by soft percussion. Lyrically, LaRue cleverly incorporates the waves metaphor to emphasize the singer’s reassurances to June that everything will be okay. The song begins with, “Let me be the riptide/ Honey/ That brings you back to shore,” to show his support and love for June through her sadness. This support is further demonstrated in the lyrics, “Tell me what it is your wanting/ What are your reaching for?” The track ends on an optimistic and reassuring note, as LaRue sings, I wanna feel you/ Like a wave that never breaks/ Never break/ We’ll never break.” The song packs an emotional punch with meaningful lyrics paired with the rawness and feeling behind LaRue’s voice.

“Never Break” is a song that resonates with the listener, as Phillip LaRue takes a personal experience and creates a piece relatable to anyone who has ever felt homesick or even longing for a time in the past. With LaRue’s vocals and soft, calming instrumental, the listener experiences a bittersweet feeling of sadness along with a hopeful, optimistic look to the future.

“Never Break” comes after a busy 2022 for Phillip LaRue with the release of his singles “Thank You June” (dedicated to his wife, June) and “Dandelion” (dedicated to his sister, Brianna), preceded by his latest EP, It All. Based in Nashville, Tennessee, La Rue creates art that reflects the world around him, with his latest pieces paying homage to his relationships with his wife and sister. To stay up to date on Phillip LaRue and his music, follow him on Facebook and Instagram. In the meantime, be sure to also give his single, “Dandelion,” a listen!
