paris jackson is a name that is instantaneously recognizable. Model, actress and activist, the versatile artist has returned with her single, “hit your knees.”
For this project, jackson worked with an all-female production team. Most notably, the song features veteran singer-songwriter Linda Perry as well as Alisha Ballard, who are co-founders of EqualizeHer. The organization seeks to address gender inequality in the music industry by encouraging the support of female creatives, specifically through collaborations.
last year i met [Linda Perry] at an EqualizeHer event at the troubadour in LA. i loved their mission to achieve equal representation of women across all aspects of the music industry. we teamed up to write and produce my new single “hit your knees”. the single features an all-female production team, from the musicians performing on the track to the mixing and mastering of the song.
– paris jackson
The song is raw and personal, as jackson gets real about her struggles with drug abuse and depression. “Hit your knees” is an expression with a religious subtext, meaning to pray to God, which is often done by kneeling. Interestingly, jackson seems to be aware that faith (regardless of religion) cannot fix everything. Still, she acknowledges that one must persist through their struggles.
No relief and no reprieve
Obscenity just so diseased
Where is he when you hit your knees, your god, your god, your god?– “hit your knees”
A tingling electric guitar completes the sense of honesty jackson commits to, with the drums to support her throughout the song. The artist sings like she’s speaking, which makes the lyrics charismatic.
Remember: jackson isn’t looking to end with one song. Her hope is that “hit your knees” is just the beginning of an effort to transform the music industry into one that is inclusive and open towards women. That means a lot of people will have to step up to create an environment where music is made together.
paris jackson is currently on tour with Incubus, an American rock band born in California. The group will be touring till the end of summer and into fall, making Los Angeles their final stop.
