The Dillinger Escape Plan and Sumerian Comics Collaborate on New Graphic Novel One of Us Is the Killer
Last month, Sumerian Comics announced a brand new graphic novel, One of Us Is the Killer. The novel is inspired by The Dillinger Escape Plan’s fifth studio album by the same name. With creatives from Rock and Roll Hell, including Sam Romesburg, Ben Roberts, and visionary artist Greg Di Angilla, as well as colorist Warnia Sahadewa from Doctor Who, the novel is sure to stun. The Dillinger Escape Plan’s founder and guitarist Ben Weinmen shared his enthusiasm for the project.

Seeing Ash Avildsen and the creative team at the newly founded Sumerian Comics, use this album as the influence for another equally ambitious artistic endeavor is amazing. I can’t wait to hold one of these things in my hands, just like I did with the many comic books I enjoyed as a kid.”

The novel follows a string of assassinations made by a politically-motivated killer. He is known to the public as The Quill, and sparks a full scale revolution. It is set in a technologically advanced city in an America of the near future, where VERTICAL INTEGRATION CORP. has created a financial synergy unlike any before. Seizing all means of production and capital available, the corporation subjects employees to work and live in a city-sized factory to support the ruling business class. The Quill is a silent but well-known hero to the lower class.
Writers Ben Roberts and Sam Romesberg were inspired to be intentional with the album title. It serves to form a story focusing on a relationship bigger than two people, instead a whole government and its people. There are multiple album references in the comic, surely recognized by The Dillinger Escape Plan’s fans, and weaves the greater themes of the songs in as well.
Ben Weinmen, founder and sole constant member throughout the career of The Dillinger Escape Plan, also owns an animal sanctuary in New Jersey and is in development on a children’s animated series, Jupiter Rocks! One of Us Is the Killer is the newest release from Sumerian Comics, founded by Ash Avildsen, and Behemoth Comics co-founders, Nathan Yocum and Ryan Swanson. The company is home to original series, including You Promised Me Darkness by Damian Connelly and MFKZ by Run.
