Landon Sears, after already releasing his “88.1” album earlier this year, revamps his “Call Collect” E.P series with its self released sixth installment. Sears has been putting his own spin on the R&B genre for a few years now, combining classic sounds from his 90’s and 00’s inspiration with a healthy amount of hip hop verses and vocals as well. Sears has also signed a writing deal with MZMC Group, a Korean based music group where his R&B songwriting skills are being utilized by K Pop names like CIX and Kang Daniel. This new addition to the “Call Collect” E.P anthology is a solid collection of smooth, crooning R&B tracks with a great addition of other guest vocalists.
Sears’ instrument selection for “Call Collect 6” includes a lush collection of smooth organs and synthesizers that fly in and out of improved melodies behind the verses. Tracks like “Up To It” show off horns and guitar as well that follow the chorus hook and add a well tinged layer of warmth to this intimate cut. Sears’ vocal range also reflects his range in musical inspirations on this project, featuring his smooth vocal chops on “Up To It”, while also bringing in rap verses on ones like “Illusions” and “Come Get My Number”. The guest vocalists of Tyra Thompson, Alex Slay, and Claire Maisto on “When You Leave” all deliver killer vocal performances and make it a truly standout track. With harmonies and classic drum samples that call back to classic R&B tracks, this song feels lush in production and performance as well as representative of Sears’ artistic vision.
All in all, Landon Sears newest addition of “Call Collect 6” is a stellar group of tracks and great demonstration of his musical abilities. Along with guest features and diversity in vocal performance, Sears cements another stellar entry in his discography streak.
