Monalia Explores Existentialism With Newest Single “We Are Dust”

Oslo-based band Monalia has released their latest single “We Are Dust” -an existential exploration of the passage of time and its ceaselessness. The indie-rock band premiered the song on February 24th, marking their first release of the year.

“We Are Dust” personifies time, criticizing it for selfishly and unrelentingly marching forward. The song examines our ‘relationship’ with time, stating that what once felt like a hopeful and thrilling affair is now parasitic and one-sided. “Time and I will grow apart”, sings lead vocalist Stine Helen Tunstrøm, “Forever lasting, but never enough”. Monalia’s single is an exhausted resignation to the plights of aging; they are no longer fighting against the inevitable, but giving in to its all-encompassing power.

“A song that confronts the relentless reality of life.”

Monalia

Mystical, dark, and melodic is what Monalia does best -drawing a majority of their inspiration from both the beauty and pain of the human experience. There is a unique easiness to Monalia’s sound, allowing you to find comfort in subjects that are otherwise deeply troubling. “We Are Dust” is a shining example of the band’s tendency to embrace darker genres and meld them with dreamy, psychedelic sounds. Falling into the self-proclaimed genre of “mountain-surf”, Monalia is deeply reminiscent of the 1980s British indie-rock and 1960s psychedelic pop scenes.

Stine Helen Tunstrøm and Terje Halmrast vocals are essential to what makes “We Are Dust” so mesmerizing. Their harmonizations work to transport you to an otherworldly soundscape, both isolating and reassuring. Svein Petter Nilssen has an electric performance on guitar and keys, sucking you even deeper into the auditory portal. Drummer Vegar Eriksfallet and bassist Bendik Dræge Orvan operate in opposition to vocals and guitar, pulling you back from your psychedelic state and grounding you with their soothing, constant beat.
