On December 2nd, Finnish-American singer, songwriter, and producer Mika Ratsula released their new single, “i walked a mile in my room.” On the track, Miki “discusses their mental health struggles and its [sic] impact on the people close to them. ‘It’s an acknowledgment that I know I can work on my mental health and make sure it doesn’t negatively affect those I love,’ notes Miki, ‘while also recognizing that it’s something I have to deal with and need patience from others while I work on it.’”
The production here is incredible, and the lyrics are absolutely achieving Miki Ratsula’s goal of being the role model they needed growing up. Both relatable and deeply personal, the discussion of the thoughts that slide through someone’s brain during a mental health crisis being set to some relatively calm music creates the necessary juxtaposition for someone who is potentially going through the aforementioned mental health crisis. Not only is the juxtaposition cool, but it just sounds fantastic.
The use of synth pads, vocal layering, and acoustic guitar to set the mood from the start is amazing. When the drums kick in with the ambient electric guitar, it’s like a wave of calm coming, a respite from the pain. Whether or not this is intentional isn’t really important. What’s important is that the point is getting across to the audience, and Miki Ratsula has a chance to get the point across even more with their debut album, i owe it to myself, coming out on March 25th, 2022!
