I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – heartbreak, as painful as it can be, oftentimes leads to some of the most beautiful art. That’s been the case in many songs that I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing this past year, and it’s the case in the newest single from Michael Rice, titled “Did You Even Love Me.” The pop ballad tells of a relationship that is broken and falling apart. It hits home for anyone who’s ever experienced heartbreak. Filled with vocals recorded from Michael’s bedroom, under the comfort of his duvet, the song takes listeners on a journey as Michael opens up and invites us in lyric by lyric, with a pop cinematic production that twists and turns around his big, soulful vocals.

Michael’s early career started out with him being a busker performing on streets to passers-by, but it was only when a video of him singing went viral on social media that he was invited to audition for a new BBC show in 2018, All Together Now, which he ended up winning. He then went to represent the UK at the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest, performing to 250 million people across Europe. He has traveled to many countries such as Sweden, The Netherlands, and Switzerland to work with some of the best producers and songwriters in the industry on his new music. Back with a brand new sound and ready to take the industry by storm, Michael is definitely one to watch!

Michael first teased “Did You Even Love Me” on TikTok when he posted a short clip of him playing the record for the first time to his cousin. Little did he know the clip would become a hit with music lovers across the platform, racking up over 500,000 views in the first 24 hours.

With one listen of the swelling melodies and emotive vocals, it’s easy to understand why the track resonated with so many. It’s hard to ignore the relatability of the lyrics and the emotions they may conjure up, particularly paired with Michael’s vocals that clearly articulate the emotional nature of the track. Even as he sings “I wish you the best, I really do / It’s so easy to say I’m okay when my heart’s breaking over you,” the thoughts behind those lines are ones that anyone who’s experienced heartbreak understands. As the vocals build into a roaring bridge, the softness of the sound production mirror the pain within the lyrics – the lengths that you’re willing to go to when you love someone, how it feels when you miss them, and how it feels to question if they even loved you. The track speaks for itself!
