There are many words to describe Lizzo and her mainstream musical success in 2019. Fierce. Bold. Unique. Throwback. Now, in anticipation of her next album, Special, Lizzo shares her latest hit single, “About Damn Time.”

From its smooth baseline and sassy lyrics that begin with, “It’s bad bitch o’clock, yeah, it’s thick-thirty / I’ve been through a lot, but I’m still flirty,” it’s obvious that Lizzo is back in her musical groove, sounding just as strong as ever. The song is the perfect representation of a typical Lizzo track, full of powerful vocals, hip-hop overtures, callbacks to 1970’s soul music and enough personality to shine through the radio.

The funky beat and uplifting lyrics are the real stars on “About Damn Time,” though. The arrangement is sheer perfection, almost testing listeners as to whether they can stay still for more than two seconds. And the pre-chorus sums up the theme of the song effortlessly, especially as society reels from the last few years: “Oh, I been so down and under pressure / I’m way too fine to be this stressed, yeah / Oh, I’m not the girl I was or used to be, uh / Bitch, I might be better.” And as Lizzo states, the song isn’t just an affirmation for herself:

“‘About Damn Time’ can lead into so many conversations … It’s about damn time I feel better, it’s about damn time we get out of this pandemic. It’s about damn time we get the first Black female Supreme Court Justice. There’s so many things.”

Ever the optimist with a beaming personality, Lizzo’s return to form is needed now more than ever — helping all of us to celebrate ourselves even as we face the world’s stresses. Lizzo’s fourth studio album, Special, will be released July 15 through Nice Life and Atlantic Records. A tour to support the album will run from September 23 to November 18. Her new reality show, Watch Out for the Big Grrrls, is also streaming on Amazon now. You can listen to Lizzo’s latest single, and watch the accompanying music video, below!
