The global alt-pop icon Lady Gaga released her highly anticipated new album MAYHEM.

Following a week of teasers and several merch drops, the queen herself, Lady Gaga, triumphantly returns to her pop roots with the release of her latest album MAYHEM. Going beyond just a nostalgic throwback, MAYHEM explores themes of chaos and transformation and celebrating music’s power to unite, provoke, and heal. About the album, Lady Gaga says,

“The album started as me facing my fear of returning to the pop music my earliest fans loved.”

She further describes the creative process behind this 14-track project as “reassembling a shattered mirror: even if you can’t put the pieces back together perfectly, you can create something beautiful and whole in its own new way.”

Track number one “Disease” is an incredibly strong start to the album. With fizzing synths and a pounding beat, we’re drawn right back in with the iconic Lady Gaga soundscapes. The song deals with traumatic events and medication with the cure for the “Disease” as a metaphor for the unconditional love Lady Gaga desires to give her partner.

Alongside “Disease,” Lady Gaga released a breathtaking music video.

Abracadabra” is an absolute highlight of the album. As Lady Gaga says in the intro of the music video, “The category is dance or die,” the song gives you no choice but to do just that. Masterfully combining pop with dance music, she creates a uniquely catchy soundscape which is only enhanced by the refrain and the bridge which would not be misplaced on the soundtrack of an early 80s dark fantasy movie. While the passage,

“Abracadabra, amor-oo-na-na
Abracadabra, morta-oo-ga-ga
Abracadabra, abra-oo-na-na
In her tongue she said, Death or love tonight”

~ Abracadabra

Sounds random at first, it cleverly incorporates the Latin-stemming words “armor” and “morta,” meaning love and death, which the final line of this passage beautifully concludes.

Garden Of Eden” is an intensely nostalgic throwback to the 2000s and early 2010s in its soundscapes, fitting right in with smash hits of the era such as Rihanna’s “S&M” for example. In the song, Lady Gaga poses as the seductive force in this garden of Eden. And just as Adam’s and Eve’s stay in this garden was short-lived, the intimate encounter illustrated in the song is as well.

Perfect Celebrity” has this instantly iconic MAYHEM sound right off the bat. It is a powerful and introspective reflection of her struggle, balancing her private life with that of her public persona. With a high-octane beat, she unfolds the struggles of being in the public light all the time and the pressure of being a “Perfect Celebrity.”

Vanish Into You” is the most emotional track on the album yet. In it, Lady Gaga utters the wish to “Vanish Into You,” essentially longing to merge with her partner to escape the worldly struggles. The song has a strongly bittersweet undertone, as it retells the carefree state of lovers, but reminisces in the irretrievable past.

Killah” takes us on a trip down funky lane. Backed by an irresistibly groovy track, Lady Gaga portrays herself as a literal and metaphorical killer, playing with her seductive- as well as her intimidating side. Even though it is marked as explicit on the album, it carries this empowering aura of confidence, overcoming lingering insecurities.

While on the surface, “Zombieboy” is a light-hearted funk- and disco track, underneath it is a loving tribute to Lady Gaga’s late friend Rick Genest, who thanks to his extensive skeleton tattoos had the nickname “Zombie Boy.” It celebrates life and the consequences of having too much fun. The song highlights the unknowns in life and that it doesn’t matter to her if she turns into something she doesn’t know, using the zombie as a metaphor, as long as her partner is the same in every way.

LoveDrug” sheds light on love as an addiction. It portrays the feeling as never ending. Lady Gaga points out how overwhelming feelings can be and how desperately she needs the love to drown them out. This is especially poignant as she tries to escape the pain, seeking solace in love.

How Bad Do U Want Me” compares her partner’s love for her with their expectations for her. The song illustrates her struggle with her partner wanting a “good girl” while looking at her, essentially being in love with the idea of her, rather than with who she really is.

Don’t Call Tonight” goes into a relationship that failed before it properly started. In this particular case she tells her would-be partner to not even try and call her unless they want to hurt her. She sees that the relationship is based on sexual pleasures only and won’t lead to anything meaningful.

Shadow Of A Man” sonically takes a heartfelt disco approach. It sheds light on the struggle of overcoming the shadow of the legacies of those who came before you. In Lady Gaga’s case, them being her (male) inspirations such as Prince, Michael Jackson and David Bowie. The song further discusses the undeniable worth of women in a male dominated world, making it a formidable female empowerment anthem.

The Beast” paints the picture of losing control to the monster within all of us. The beast in the song appears to be a werewolf about to inevitably transform. Lady Gaga wants to free the beast along with her partner so they can love each other despite their bestial nature and/or intentions.

Blade Of Grass” is a deeply romantic and meaningful track about her fiancé proposing to her by wrapping a blade of grass around her finger. It is an ode to the backyard where so many emotionally valuable events such as said proposal took place. With hauntingly enchanting soundscapes the song takes us on a journey through these life-altering moments, leaving us in awe.

Die With A Smile” is not only the grand finale of the masterpiece that is MAYHEM, but it is also a glorious comeback collaboration between Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars who up until this point haven’t released any new music in two to three years. It is a dramatic and romantic ballad promising their lovers that they’ll treasure each moment with them because tomorrow is not guaranteed. Further deepening this romantic notion, they state,

“If the party was over
And our time on Earth was through
I’d wanna hold you just for a while
And die with a smile
If the world was ending
I’d wanna be next to you

~ Die With A Smile

Alongside “Die With A Smile,” Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars dropped a wonderfully retro-style music video.
