On December 1st, la loye, the project of Dutch artist Lieke Heusinkveld, released their debut EP to live underwater. The final track, “about imagining things,” was the last single and will be the primary focus of this review. Equal parts Big Thief and Phoebe Bridgers, “about imagining things” is sure to garner attention from the international community.
The track is a slow burn to a perfect climax, introducing increasingly more electronic elements along the way. By the time the synth arpeggiator comes in, the strings have come and gone, the acoustic guitar has given way to electric, and the drums have kicked in. This synthesis of acoustic and electronic instrumentation is amazing, and I can’t wait to listen to the rest of the EP.
That’s not even mentioning the melody of the vocals, which sounds like it’s lifted straight off of a boygenius project. It’s haunting. It’s melancholic and hopeful. It’s absolutely gorgeous. The production on the vocals allows them to feel human throughout, even as more electronic elements are introduced. It’s amazing.
