Australian singer/songwriter Isabel Wood is back with a captivating new single which offers a deeply personal reflection of a relationship ended in abandonment. Produced by Tom Eggert and mastered by Matthew Gray, “BELOW ZERO” is the first follow up to Isabel’s acclaimed 2020 single, “Mind Reader.” Its organic arrangement and raw lyrics fits with Isabel’s branding as a sad-girl pop artist who creates sonically compelling experiences that are both therapeutic and irresistable.
A bittersweet melody composed of glistening strings and striking percussions carry Isabel’s soothing vocals through the chorus, which is where she actually started on this song. She says. “I actually had the chorus melody stuck in my head for weeks before I found the right lyrics to attach to it. Once I found those, the rest of the track fell into place really quickly. I’m so happy to be able to kick off 2021 with a ballad.”
Her vulnerable lyrics tell of devastating heartbreak. Not only was she dumped in front of neighbors (I mean, come on – shouldn’t this be something done in private?), but she was also told false heartfelt statements and led on to believe something completely different than what happened. The abandonment has her trying to push down her true feelings in the hopes of moving on – she tells herself that she didn’t like nor love them at all…but also admits that she did indeed fall in love.
If you’ve been blasting “Driver’s License” by Olivia Rodrigo on repeat since it came out last month and want to give your ears something new for a change, but aren’t ready to let go of the heartbreak ballad vibes, give “BELOW ZERO” a listen!
