“The Chemist” had been on released May 6th, debuting on Spotify’s influential New Music Friday Playlist and marking their second project of 2022. The release of the single came directly behind the band’s recent collaboration, “Eternal Flame”, with the popular Chinese mobile game Arknights. While Forts has released several other projects under critically-acclaimed electronic music labels, “The Chemist” was released independently -allowing for their musical range to further evolve.

With “The Chemist”, Forts has taken a turn towards brooding, edgy pop. The track is simultaneously high-energy and eerie, keeping you totally entranced throughout the entirety of the three minutes and fifteen seconds of the song. As explained by Forts, “The Chemist” is inspired by Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD). The disorder, which greatly alters the affected person’s reality, is caused by the rise and fall of hormones in the body. This can lead to severe symptoms such as extreme depression, suicidal thoughts, anxiety, and periods of confusion. “‘The Chemist’ is about personifying the disorder as a monster, to remind anyone dealing with mental health issues that they are not their illness”, says Forts. “The song paints Mars (lead singer) as the chemist, struggling to tame the chemical monster that she hides from the world”.
