Higgs and Dondi Collaborate on Reminiscent Hip-Hop Track, “I Miss The Old Us”
Life has a tendency to get away from us and the older we get, the more reminiscent we can become of so many more lived experiences, and sometimes…sometimes we just miss our old lives, when things were simpler, less chaotic, and perhaps easier. The desire to return to simpler times is the underlying theme of a new collaboration from Higgs and Dondi, titled “I Miss The Old Us.”
Higgs is a Big Island native now based on O’ahu who has honed his musical acumen over various bands since 2005. He writes chill ukelele rap songs with island influences and left-of-center pop vibes, offering lyrically-rich, raw, and punchy sound. Undefined by any single genre, Higgs draws on elements of rap, pop, reggae, and R&B, as well as singer/songwriter vibes, to create a sound wholly his own as he invites listeners to connect with him on a basic human level. Dondi is from the beautiful island of Kauai and pulls inspiration from Hawaii’s very distinct music culture. She strays from the traditional island sounds with her own unique style of acoustic pop.
These two artists bring their unique experiences and influences into an intersection that readily recalls the sounds of Fort Minor, with its introspective lyricism and orchestral backings. “I Miss The Old Us” is precisely what the title suggests – a lament for the old days while fighting the internal struggle of wanting to also live in the present and look forward. While the first verse initially focuses inward on what Higgs misses about his old self, the second verse pivots to what he misses about an old significant other, tying back to the “us” mentioned in the title. Between verses, sentimental violin strings highlight the nostalgia. Dondi brings the emotional message to a new level with a passionate vocal performance that is backed by swelling instrumentals before the outro soars in with vocalizations and marching beats. The distinctive lyricism and poignant vocals make “I Miss The Old Us” a relatable and reflective experience, so listen and watch the lyric video below!
