In today’s age of online dating, situationships and half-hearted talking stages, the search for love is not one to be taken lightly. 23-year-old singer songwriter Amelia Moore has released her latest EP, “he’s just not that into you!”, which illuminates the reality of modern relationships with songs that are, at their core, a reflection of more vulnerable experiences.
“he’s just not that into you!” consists of eight tracks that highlight Moore’s indie pop creativity and sensational vocal range. Many of the songs feature sparse instrumentals that provide fans with a more intimate understanding of their lyricism. Moore’s “that girl” presents both acoustic guitar and vocal harmonies that blend together to create a very personal touch. The intro of the EP’s final track, “ballerina”, uncovers a repetitive piano motif that allow fans to understand the song’s true depths.
The 2009 eponymous romcom, “He’s Just Not That Into You” uncovers the art of misread signals, fantasy expectations and the ultimate truth: “if he wants to, he will.” The transparency of Moore’s newest release provides listeners with opportunities to relate to the passion and confusion of relationships.
I wanted to create a musical journey for anyone grappling with the lingering presence of an ex-partner, featuring songs that serve as reminders of the toxicity of past relationships. It’s a mixtape designed to reassure listeners that they deserve better and that it’s time to let go. Consider it a gift from me to you, and perhaps even to myself (yikes!). – Amelia Moore
“back to him” is the most popular track on the EP, accumulating nearly 800,000 Spotify streams. Moore collaborated with American rapper and record producer Timbaland to develop the track’s R&B structure and style. With lyrics such as “If he wanted to, he would show face” and “To you, it’s something real, to him, it’s physical,” this eye-opener of a song can cause listeners to look at their own personal relationships in a new light.
Speaking of relationship revelations, “easy” allows Moore to reflect on her own preconceived notions of love and embrace the simplicity of being around her lover. This earworm-worthy song illustrates how love does not always have to be a terrifying endeavor.
For the longest time, I convinced myself that love was this scary, dramatic emotional rollercoaster that had to hurt or else it was boring. I wrote ‘easy’ because I started dating someone who shattered that entire thought process . . . This song is wildly specific but also so lighthearted and captures what I think falling in love for the first time feels like. – Amelia Moore
Maybe there’s someone you’ve been crushing on who doesn’t seem to reciprocate the feeling, or someone you keep running back to despite knowing you deserve better. Maybe there’s someone you want to get physically intimate with, or someone who acts all lovey-dovey but lacks emotional maturity. Maybe there’s someone you want to become more-than-friends with, or someone whose problems you choose to dance around and ignore simply to have that sense of security.
Whatever the case, Moore’s songs speak to the heart and shed light on the complicated, in-between feelings not talked about enough. The sheer depths of her musicality are revealed through the diverse instruments used throughout the EP; no two songs flow the same. While love can sometimes be “easy”, Moore’s July 26th release accentuates how, sometimes, “he’s just not that into you!”
