Gayle Showcases Her Vulnerability in New Single “god has a sense of humor”
This has been Gayle’s year in music, as 2022 marks the drop of her debut EP a study of the human experience volume one, which includes singles such as “kiddie pool” and her most well-known hit, “abcdefu.” Now, preceding the release of her forthcoming second EP a study of the human experience volume two (out October 7th), Gayle dropped her newest track, “god has a sense of humor.”
Listen to “god has a sense of humor” below:
The single strays away from her typical sound as a ballad heavily featuring the piano at the forefront, with drums and bass added throughout as the song builds up to the second verse of the chorus.
Along with a more stripped-down musical arrangement compared to her previous songs, “god has a sense of humor” is full of introspective lyrics that reflect on the state of the world and her place in it. The song opens with Gayle revealing the questions she had following the death of a friend, “When I was 13, a friend of mine died/ That’s when I realized that we aren’t here forever/ And I wonder what she saw when she got to the other side/ Was she pleasantly surprised? Were all her questions answered?”

With its musical arrangement lending focus to the story of its lyrics, “god has a sense of humor” showcases Gayle’s ever-growing writing prowess, along with a more vulnerable side to the singer as she opens up about her struggles and thoughts about the world.
