“First Thing” is the Nu-Disco Track We Didn’t Know We Needed from Satin Jackets and Tailor

Ahead of his forthcoming double LP, Reunion, Satin Jackets recently released his third and final pre-release single that fuses his signature Ibiza-ready nu-disco sound with tasteful modern synthpop. “First Thing” features the vocals of UK singer Tailor and brings forth the late summer dance vibes that dance lovers are yearning for.

Formed in 2012, Satin Jackets is the brainchild of German producer Tim Bernhardt and inspired by the clean productions of artists like Chic and studio genius Trevor Horn. Tim set out to reintroduce polish and sheen back into the modern disco scene, explaining “It always sounded like the musical equivalent of a fashion magazine’s cover.” The result was “You Make Me Feel Good,” a sublimely laidback slide of Balearic House that introduced Satin Jackets to the world. Released on storied Belgian label Eskimo Recordings, the single quickly established Tim as one to watch in the thriving nu-disco scene. He later became established as one of Eskimo’s flagship artists, defining the Satin Jackets sound with his debut 2016 album, Panorama Pacifico. From wanting to recreate the sound of magazine covers to appearing on them, the past few years have been quite some journey for the producer. Hidden away in the unlikely surroundings of one of Germany’s ancient forests, out of sight but fully in control, Tim is producing music that reflects the glamour and glitz of ’70s Manhattan, artfully updated for the 21st century.

Reunion was inspired in part by the Lockdown Streams that drew hundreds of thousands of Satin Jackets fans looking for a nu-disco oasis while stuck inside. Through it, Satin Jackets simultaneously refines the existing formula of his music while/ also growing comfortable enough to step outside of that box and into more pop-accessible tunes. “First Thing” is a great example of what makes this forthcoming double album, released this Friday, August 26th, a level up from the producer’s already successful first two records.

“First Thing” might be a dance track at its core, but it also has a chilled-out vibe to it that makes it both poolside and dancefloor ready. With its composed vocals, courtesy of Tailor, and soothing synthpop production, layered with piano keys to cement the nu-disco roots, the track evokes feelings of nostalgia that complement the lyrics. The message is one that can be considered reflective of the world that inspired Reunion – the desire for peaceful moments in an otherwise crazy environment, even if it means thinking about how things might have been different had you made a different choice during an old passing. The track’s catchy hook and glistening vocalizations transport listeners to a world of setting suns and cooling temperatures.

You can listen to “First Thing” along with the previous two single releases, “Different Directions” and “Move On” below while you await the release of Reunion.
