EXCLUSIVE PREMIERE – ELPENTHE Teams Up With Half Wolf For “What We Got Away With”
Today, “LA-based songwriter and acclaimed producer” ELPENTHE (aka Elliot Beenk) has released his new single, “What We Got Away With,” featuring Half Wolf! This is the second single to be released for ELPENTHE’s debut EP, Elpenthe I. Featuring fantastic electro-pop production from Beenk and TK Kayembe (Lizzo, Kehlani, Kid LAROI) as well as gorgeous vocals from Half Wolf, “What We Got Away With” serves as a confessional that also functions as a cry for understanding.

The lyrics on this track tell the story of someone sneaking out of their house to go out with someone and the fallout that could have resulted from that. Of course, there isn’t much fallout discussed in the song, otherwise it wouldn’t be “What We Got Away With.” As Half Wolf dictates in the bridge, “By the time the cops came, I was in my bed like I never left.” Mixed by Kevin Smith (Harry Styles, Phoebe Bridgers, Frank Ocean) and mastered by Stuart Hawkes (Amy Winehouse, Lorde, Charli XCX), the song sounds immaculate. The synth sounds are exceptional, and the use of bells and a glockenspiel lend a childlike whimsicality to the story being told in the lyrics.
ELPENTHE “began his musical explorations in Iowa after coming across a promotion on the lid of a Pizza Hut box. After collecting enough tokens, he traded them in for a mix CD that included the Red Hot Chili Peppers,” and the nine-year old was infatuated and enthralled. “Since moving to LA, ELPENTHE has worked with his childhood hero Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers), and collaborated with Lissie, Leo Nocentelli (The Meters), Finish Ticket, Brian West (Maroon 5, U2, Nelly Furtado, K’Naan), and Wondaland (Janelle Monae’s creative collective).” In short, Elliot Beenk has been around and busy for a while.
“What We Got Away With” is an excellent primer for the EP, and I for one am excited to see what ELPENTHE did for the other four songs, particularly his cover of Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Scar Tissue,” the only song to feature his own vocals. Be on the lookout for more coverage, and check out “What We Got Away With” below! Let us know what you think!
