On October 21st, our designated spokesperson for heartbreak, Dean Lewis, returned with his newest single “Looks Like Me.” Lewis has received international acclaim with his 2019 Album “A Place We Know.” Featuring the breakup track ‘Be Alright’ which went triple platinum in the U.S and garnered him a #1 spot on Billboard’s Emerging Artist Chart.
The Australian singer has solidified himself as an artist whose vividly emotive lyrics will bring a tear to your eye. Yet, this new track is one that will simultaneously make you tap your feet and sway your hips. Right from the get-go there is an organic, pulsation of the guitar that is soon harmonized with the thumping clap of drums. There is a strong liveliness to the instrumentation as it elevates the listening experience and makes it one that courses through your whole body.
It wouldn’t truly be a Lewis song without the deep articulation of a harrowing relationship in his lyrics. Noting on the inspiration, Lewis says,
“It was just one of those relationships that never quite came together – no matter how much I wanted it to. One night on the phone, we were living in different cities, she told me she was hanging out with a guy who looked like me.”
While in the moment, it was upsetting, Lewis has converted these memories and feelings into an anthem that actually feels up-lifting. The rhythm continuously picks up leading to the climatic and utterly freeing chorus: “But maybe I’m just not good enough at all to feel your love.” It’s that belted line that makes you finally feel like you can breathe a sigh of release. After all the build up of trying to weather the storm, Lewis comes out of a crushing relationship on the brighter side.
