DEAD CHIC WELCOMES YOU TO “THE VENUS BALLROOM” IN NEW EP
Franco-English band Dead Chic has released their debut EP The Venus Ballroom on March 24. It includes five songs and one instrumental interlude, with the running time of 25:17. For an EP, the band has been able to showcase their versatility through their rich production and rough, raw emotions from the vocals to accompany it.

The opening track “You Got It” is Dead Chic’s triumphant entrance into the world of music. It is a high energetic rock anthem with soul influences. Piano grooves, arena-like guitars, and a horn section dominate the world of the song as lead singer Andy Balcon’s raspy voice is inviting the listener to his story. This is the standout track of the EP due to its star power. In addition, it received the star treatment by having an accompanying video. Overall, the tone of the song can be highlighted with its massive chorus and tendency to crescendo.
“The Belly Of The Jungle” keeps up with the momentum of the first track. However, it gives the listener the sense that they are spinning around in a carousel as the vocals switch from sultry whispers to roaring verses. It is heavily driven by a percussion and their trademark piano grooves. Like a jungle, the song has a wild tone as the listener is seduced one moment and then the next they are commanded to dance.
“Les Fleurs Sechees” is the third track of the EP. Unlike the previous tracks, this one takes a sharp turn from the carousel to a dark carnival. There is a departure of the previous arena and soul influences as this track is poetic in tone. The song finds Balcon brooding about a romance in both English and French.
“Le Malecon” is the interlude with a running time of 1:44. It is an instrumental track that showcases the band’s production with a guitar-driven background.
“Ballad Of Another Man” is Dead Chic’s return from the interlude that took place before. Balcon celebrates a well-lived life in this surf-rock influenced song. The guitars and percussion are breezy as it is fitting for the listener to begin dancing along to it. The last track “Good God” is the cooling down song after an energetic journey. The song is driven by acoustic guitars and minimal percussion as Balcon’s vocal abilities are full of vulnerability and honesty. It is proof that behind every strong person, there is a raw, vulnerable side that is dying to come out.

Dead Chic was created out of the partnership of the lead singer Andy Balcon and guitarist Damien Felix. Balcon is from Wakefield and performed in festivals like Glastonbury with duo Heymoonshaker. On the other hand, Felix has performed with his bands Catfish and Bigger throughout the world. Both musicians have crossed paths regularly during their tours where they have discussed music and art. It wasn’t until 2020 that their partnership became official. Dead Chic was born with the release of their debut single “Too Far Gone.” After tours and the additions of members, the recording of The Venus Ballroom occured in April 2022.
Although the dates are currently unknown, Dead Chic plans on having an international tour for their EP sometime this year. For updates regarding the band, Dead Chic have an Instagram and Facebook.
