Heading into their 10th year as a family, the Desert Hearts group is as boisterous as ever in exploring the far reaches of the dance floor and sonic palettes with its sub-label, Desert Hearts Black. Led in curation by co-founder Marbs, its 2022 goal is to offer a wider range of techno and house music for its growing audience. Marbs released the first EP under DHB just last month, titled Minds on the Run, to kick things off and set the new alignment for this year and now the second installment comes from Derin Epsilon and Galestian.

The full Reset EP includes an original 6+ minute track from the producers along with a remix from Fur Coat and another from Marbs and Evan Casey. “Reset” in its original form provides a thrilling embodiment of late-night techno brimming with melodic sensibilities. Progressive house adjacencies can be heard throughout the track’s progression, all while being rooted within deeper techno tendencies. As a crest of rave flares warp back and forth between rising melodies, listeners are quickly transported into a state of euphoria that can be found within the excitement on dance floors. Organic continuities of rotating synths and brighter melodies flow effortlessly, conveying the label’s new direction in 2022. On the song’s origins, Galestian shares,

Darin and I decided to collaborate on a track while we were both in Berlin during the big lockdowns of 2020-2021. The track emerged from the pressures surrounding this new reality that we had to slowly get accustomed to. We started bouncing a few ideas back and forth, and this one stuck the best.

The original is followed by the first remix on the EP from Venezuelan DJ and producer, Fur Coat, who is now based in Barcelona. His synth-laden rework conveys a more dreamy, 80s-infused aesthetic – the B-side of the pillow in an inevitably all-night dance-off. The staccato beats are leveled out more, giving the track a more orchestral infusion of sound at times, presenting a more dynamic juxtaposition between the light and dark sounds.

DHB’s Marbs and Evan Casey join in on the final EP offering, another remix that represents a captivating and seductive reimagination that ends hair-rising parallelism with the evocative eye-focused EP artwork, designed by Marbs. There is a significant energetic shift to a psychedelic soundscape with the sound design with its thrumming basslines and pulsating beats. It creates an ominous atmosphere filled with heavy anticipation for what is next to come, which aligns well with the heavy anticipation for a return to the late-night dance floors which Desert Hearts is known and beloved for.

About Desert Hearts:

Having grown up in Southern California with the infamous motley crew known as Desert Hearts, Marbs was primarily influenced by legends like Pink Floyd and Tool, while also listening to underground hip-hop, reggae, and rock. His no-holds-barred love for all genres, displayed from an early age, would grow his fortuitous career as a DJ/Producer.

Over the last several years, Marbs and Evan Casey have helped grow the DH label subsidiary, Desert Hearts Black, into a respected platform for melodic strains of house and techno. The inaugural EP Torus – a collab from Marbs, Rinzen, and Evan Casey – reached the #1 spot on Beatport’s Overall chart after its singles were supported by Deep Dish and many others. The label has already seen releases from Tim EngelhardtDance SpiritThugfuckerArudeAnakim, Rinzen, and Lunar Plane.

They’ve continued to thrive through an otherwise tumultuous year for the industry, taking the Twitch world by storm and reaching tens of thousands of viewers weekly with their music.
