Cry Tears of Joy: BabyJake Drops Music Video
Rising Nashville-based singer-songwriter BabyJake shared an original single called “Cry Cry Cry.” It follows his other recent singles “Gambler’s Prayer” and “We Got To Get Together To Be Free,” both released in the past month.
“Cry Cry Cry” is a soulful, retro-influenced power ballad in which the singer pours his feelings as he begs his ex-lover to not mourn for the end of their union. It is characterized by bluesy vocals, a gospel chorus, and ’70s guitars. While the typical tale of heartbreak is interpreted through the lyrics, BabyJake shares the deeper meaning behind them and the influences of the track.
“I pulled a ton of inspo from Joe Cocker on ‘Cry Cry Cry.’ The production was made to be a soft ballad that explodes into this intense hook that rings out in a live music setting as well as on your iPhone speaker. As far as the songwriting goes, the song is about a man (slightly hinted at myself in the past tense) who is addicted to cocaine & realizes the tragedy it causes him, but isn’t able to let it go (something I dealt with in my own life for quite a while). The hook lyrics ‘Don’t you Cry, Cry, Cry for me baby’ are the man talking to himself. What ya gunna do, cry about it? On the other hand it could also be loved ones that see what’s going on & are deeply saddened by the experience. It’s open for interpretation, but for me it’s definitely a monologue going on within his own head & nobody else. Ya got to get up & do something about it. It aint gunna help itself. Don’t cry about it. Don’t cry for me baby, don’t cry..”

In addition to the single, a music video was released where it is minimalistic, but emotionally-charged. We find the singer drowning metaphorically and literally as he makes distressed facial expressions.
Ever since he was chosen as a VEVO DSCVR artist, BabyJake has been poised for greatness. In 2019, he swept everyone off their feet with the release of his debut single “Cigarettes On The Patio.” As a result, he became critically acclaimed by publications like Billboard, Wonderland, and American Songwriter. He has collaborated with 24kGoldn and Dillon Francis. BabyJake’s music is known for bringing the ’70s into the modern day and embellishing the musical landscape with his brash, but classy artistry. Coming up next, he is set to perform at Milwaukee’s Summerfest this month, as well as embarking on a string of tours, starting in September.
