Conor Maynard Honors Whitney Houston With Single “Dance With Somebody”
Conor Maynard is no stranger to the spotlight. Beginning his career at 19, Maynard was a YouTube sensation best known for his singing videos. His talent and passion for music quickly amassed him a dedicated following of subscribers, pushing him to move off of YouTube and begin a professional career. Maynard became one of the first YouTubers to transition their digital career to IRL stardom. Now, at 29 years old, the singer and actor has accomplished what many hope to achieve in a lifetime. His debut album, “Contrast”, secured a number one spot in the UK’s charts -producing five UK top ten singles and leading to international recognition. Maynard received awards, a world tour, and even a collaboration with the illustrious producer Pharrell Williams. Maynard’s talents, however, were not limited to his career as a recording artist; the UK singer had also previously starred in the Broadway show Kinky Boots.

On February 11th, Maynard released his reimagining of Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” as a means of honoring the 10th anniversary of the musical legend’s passing. Maynard’s version is somber and melancholic, turning the once-upbeat hit into a heartfelt ballad. “Dance With Somebody” is an ode to the power music can have over emotions. “From doing covers for such a large part of my career, I’m incredibly aware of the power of familiarity and how people’s favorite songs can make them feel nostalgic as well as bring them mixed emotions,” says Maynard. “I always felt the chorus of ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’ had melancholic undertones. I was dealing with a situation where I wanted to be out with my friends and dancing with people, but I just couldn’t bring myself to do it at the time. This track captures that somber feeling.”
