Chris Botti announced the release of his debut with Blue Note Records, dropping an album titled Vol. 1 on October 20. Ahead of the date, the trumpeter has shared the lead single, “Old Folks.” More recently, he also released “My Funny Valentine.”
Botti is one of the most popular instrumentalists in the world, and it’s not at all an understatement. The Grammy-winning musician has shared stages with renowned artists like Sting, Barbara Streisand, Frank Sinatra and Aretha Franklin.
Having successfully crossed over from jazz renown to pop stardom, Botti’s first album will circle back to a sound closer to acoustic or classic jazz, allowing him to express his enthusiasm for the potential of the genre— past and present. Fans can certainly anticipate music that is both exceptional and easygoing.
“Old Folks” is five minutes of excellent jazz. Botti gives the trumpet a warm, soft sound that fills the room in the right way. There’s nothing excessive or heavy about it, instead achieving a great balance of sound and silence that occurs in between— the highest level of quality.
While Botti leads, the drums keep a steady pace in the background, a soft snare that can barely be heard. The piano is pleasant, sometimes playing chords but also doing its own kind of riff when it has a turn. It’s playful, and could easily be improvised, but effortless nonetheless.
Chris Botti is understandably a favorite trumpeter. Listeners will be delighted to know that the musician will be on tour to celebrate his debut album. The tour starts now and will continue throughout May of next year, as Botti makes his way across the United States. Tickets are available for purchase on his official website.
