Emerging singer, songwriter, and producer Chitra has released her 3rd original single, “NUMB.” It is a wavy garage track that describes the crushing realization of an unfaithful relationship, where all gestures of love turn out to be smoke and mirrors. Sonically, it is her darkest release to date, emphasizing her raw yet poetic lyricism.
Chitra is a young Indian-American artist currently based in Los Angeles, California. She has accumulated various talents throughout her life, including learning violin and viola and Jazz, Pop, and Classical South Indian vocal training. Combining this diverse background with intern experience for the iconic Mark Ronson, Chitra continues to grow and shape her unique musical identity.
Chitra first teased “NUMB” by posting an ethereal chopped vocal sample on Instagram this past February, building anticipation. This catchy loop acts as the heart of the track, repeating “Using me didn’t ask to be / Using me.” The song begins with light vocal runs over a garage percussion breakdown, swiftly moving into the first verse. By the pre-chorus, the mid-section expands, adding a new rhythm with a sound that could be distorted strings or a synth. As the song continues, Chitra’s voice fills the space with various adlibs. Her dark and full vocal tone effectively conveys her story:
Stoic in the heat of the moment
Yeah I just seem to freeze in the flashing lights
Cause I’m a victim of your mind
Anaesthetic in what I’ve become
Chitra, “NUMB”
Although Chitra has been featured on tracks by Meridian in 2019 and 2021, her solo journey did not begin until late 2021 with the release of “Throwaway,” which now has over 200k streams. Between then and now, she has posted multiple snippets, demos, and remixes across Instagram and Soundcloud, sharing a behind-the-scenes view of her process. Preceding “NUMB” was “Aftertaste,” released earlier this year and is currently on its way to 500k streams.
Overall, Chitra delivers a moody alternative vibe, mixing electronic and R&B elements. She is dedicated to experimentation in her work, marking herself as one to watch.
