Chase Soundz Returns to “KILL IT”

On February 25th, Jamaican hip-hop artist Chase Soundz released his latest single, “KILL IT.” “Inspired greatly by internationally acclaimed artists such as Mick Jenkins, Vybz Kartel, 50 Cent, Smino, and JID,” Chase Soundz began writing music and poetry at 15. “Kill It” draws heavily from Mick Jenkins for the sound of the beat, and the flows are an excellent synthesis of Little Simz and Popcaan.

That last point should be addressed first. The mix of hip-hop and Jamaican dancehall on this track is apparent in the vocals of the hook, and it works well with the jazz-rap sound. Not only is the energy powerful, but the genre-blending proves just how strong of an artist Chase Soundz is. The lyrics and flows are incredible. The concept of the song is removing anything from your life that will get in the way of you achieving your dreams, and though the metaphor of “Kill it” is not meant to be taken literally, the idea of destroying your inner demons is fantastic.

The production on this track, handled by Wrona, is also fantastic. I’m a sucker for any beat that involves a vibraphone, but that’s not the only incredible production aspect of “KILL IT.” The trap hi-hats never feel overbearing, the snare sound is great, and the vocal production here is awesome. Chase Soundz never feels buried, and the doubling of the vocals on the hook blends so well with the 808s that it feels like you’re in the room with this song being performed live. Very few artists have been able to do that successfully, and Chase Soundz did it very early in his career. It’s astounding.

I can’t wait to see what else Chase Soundz does in his career. Currently based in the US, he should have more opportunities to work directly with his inspirations, and I think that will open up his sound even more. I’m very excited. Check out “KILL IT” below, and let us know what you think!

Obsessed with all things music. Finished that MFA, so now I’m apparently a master of this. Bouncing around state borders, going wherever. If you see me at a show, say hey!
