Born in the heart of Amsterdam, Celine Cairo grew up in a music-loving family. Her father a passionate amateur drummer, her mother a music-enthusiast listening to Fado, Flamenco and Jazz, Celine grew up hearing an eclectic mix of genres. Her mom found an old classical guitar on the streets of Amsterdam, had it fixed, and gifted it to Celine on her 14th birthday, which blossomed Celine’s artistic endeavors. She soon started writing her own songs and performing locally.
By the time she was 18, Celine played small venues all over the Netherlands and won a local award that led to a performance in Carnegie Hall, New York. She went on to study music at the Conservatory of Amsterdam and soon found her mentor in British artist and producer Fin Greenall aka FINK. After debuting an acoustic EP, she began to headline across the Netherlands then eventually left for New York and Los Angeles to write songs for her debut album with producer Bill Lefler and her band. “Free Fall” came out in 2016 and has since racked up over 10 million streams and received a number of accolades and recognitions.
Celine has been writing songs for a new album, which symbolizes a new chapter in her career, and for other artists for nearly the last four years. She’s working alongside London-based producer, Tim Bran, and German producer, Benjamin Rheinlander, on this new body of work. She took her time to grow and shape her sound and the songs until the pieces eventually all came together, challenging herself to become a more internationally focused artist.
“Bird Song” is the first single to be released off of her upcoming album. It highlights our complicated relationship with the natural world and calls into question what it means to lose touch with it. Do we lose ourselves?
The mellow soundscape is created by trip-hoppy drums, lush percussions, and swelling atmospheric elements. Bolstering the unique sound, Celine draws listeners closer with her ethereal vocals. With her impressive songwriting, she captivates her audience and brings us on a journey into a world that she holds dear. It’s a world that has offered her, and all of us, a lot. Yet it’s fading. And there’s a sadness in her song as she pleads for a return to a more natural world. She yearns for lively songs and horizons, not silence and concrete roads.
“Bird Song” is the type of song that you could lose yourself in. The peaceful atmosphere created by the tranquil sounds and soothing vocals creates a world for you to disappear into when you close your eyes. It’s a merging of man-made and natural, a front where the world explored in the lyrics also exists. It’s a soft lullaby that pulls you in and carries you along its rolling landscape.
With a new album, over 14 million streams to date, and a growing fanbase, 2021 is sure to be full of highlights for Celine Cairo.
