Australian artist Cap Carter continues to showcase his dedication to speaking his truth with a strong voice in his newest single of 2021, “Gold.” Known for his original music and honest storytelling, Cap stands out for his distinctive and authentic vocals.
Growing up in an area of Western Sydney that’s become renowned for producing world-class hip-hop talent, Cap embraced the music he heard coming out of the area, while also proving it’s a hotbed for all types of music. The openness and vulnerability of Cap’s music have always allowed him to connect with fans on a deeper level than just an artist-fan relationship. He’s not afraid to showcase his true self, allowing his audience to relate to his experiences while showing the reality of his journey to winning his life back. Writing through his personal and lived experiences, Cap works a fusion of R&B and soul with an edge and grit that is unique and refreshing.
His dedication to authentically sharing his life is transparent in “Gold,” a song that originally reflected the breakdown of his parents’ marriage, but has since taken on a different meaning. Cap lived with his father post-divorce, which led to a strained relationship that created tension that remained for years. However, Cap has more recently re-considered the way he saw his father. His own marriage breakdown, and a stint in rehab, led to the pair reconnecting, and during a traumatic period of his life, Cap found his father again. This track showcases the strength of CAp’s voice, something he has always prided himself on. He shares,
I’ve experienced a lot of unresolved anger and trauma, and I made sure to let that out when we were doing the vocal takes.
There’s a juxtaposition between the heart-racing production and Cap’s vulnerable, emotional lyricism. Moments of softness are nestled in the production, such as the guitar on the track being inspired by Johnny Cash, something his mother used to listen to at home. The raw emotion that exudes through the gritty vocals lightly balances the bittersweet instrumentals and lyrics. Listeners get a deep glimpse into the anger, sadness, and disappointment that follows the inspiration behind the track.
Cap is 10 months sober now, having gone to rehab. “Gold” is the sound of a man rising from the ashes and embracing a life that looks different than he might have previously expected. For those that need the help to keep going, let this be your soundtrack.
