The Californian singer and songwriter Billie Eilish sang, for the first time, Barbie’s song “What Was I Made For” on the stage of Lollapalooza Chicago 2023, a great surprise for the audience.

Billie Eilish performed “What Was I Made For” during her set at Lollapalooza Chicago 2023.

The singer catches her breath and asks the crowd to do the same because as she states “I’mma need breathe for this next one…”. When the instrumental starts, the crowd goes crazy. It must be a magical experience to be present when a song is sung on the stage for the first time. In this case, more than 100,000 were having that.

Billie, 21, has been performing songs with deep and sensitive lyrics – such as “Ocean Eyes” (2016) and “When The Party Is Over” (2019) – for a long time, but “What Was I Made For” seems to have something extra. It could be the whole scene that the song follows in Barbie’s movie or that while human beings we struggle – and we hope things go well. With no doubt, “What Was I Made For” live is a unique experience.

Even though the song was written for the movie, it easily resonates with Eilish’s life:

“(…) every single lyric is exactly how I feel.”

The song is demanding and Billie is aware of it. She sat on the stage to perform it. And she sang it smoothly yet sharply, serving all the notes to her crowd. With their help, Eilish questioned the world what she was made for and reminded us that someday she will know how to feel [about it].

Since Lollapalooza Chicago, “What Was I Made For” has been part of the setlist of the tour. With more 4 concerts ahead, including the big and famous Reading & Leeds Festival, Billie Eilish will have the chance to thrill the audience.
