It’s Time for Some Newcomers and Classics! Aftershock, Day One Top Acts

Aftershock 2024 started with a bang and a boom and a huge day of rock and roll. From future stars like The Funeral Portrait and Return to Dust, to iconic figures in the industry like Pantera and Slayer, this day was non-stop, beginning to end, slay fest.

Here are a few favorites we experienced throughout the day…

The Funeral Portrait came out on stage to a sample from Frank Sinatra singing about how his baby had shot him down. They kept up that sad poetic tone with their punchy emotional lyrics that had their fans chiming in. Lee Jennings, the vocalist, kept everyone’s energy high with his animated stage presence and constant crowd interactions. Before their song Blood Mother, he told the crowd, “this song is about sucking blood from your best friend’s neck.” Their new album Greetings From Suffocate City just came out last month, and they are definitely one to watch.

All the way from Detroit, Michigan, The Armed did not show any jet lag in their performance. Two dueling vocalists screamed their heads off. Fast-paced thrashing guitar and heart-pounding drums. The energy was high and crazy, with every member dancing wild style across the stage, kicking things, smashing mic stands, throwing guitars. They proclaimed, “We’re here to provide an alternative.” And that they did, and we loved it.

Descartes A Kant (DAK for short) was another surprise for us. Coming all the way from Mexico and featuring an old computer on their stage, every member wore retro chic orange jumpsuits that matched their funky electronic sound. The computer proclaimed, “Turning your pain into art has never been easier,” before breaking into a thumping electro beat with fun, upbeat guitar. The duo female vocalists with keyboardist and drummer proved too much for the outdated computer, which started sputtering and smoking by the end of the show.

I can’t call myself a “juggalo,” but anyone could feel the excitement and sense of family in the crowd to see Insane Clown Posse perform. It was one of their few listed performances this year and one of the first times they’ve returned to Sacramento in quite some time. The crowd went absolutely wild to each of their classic hits, yelling along the lyrics in unison and breaking down the barriers from performer to audience member.

With such an amazing opener to the weekend, we expect this to be a festival for the ages.

We’re so psyched to see groups like Poppy, Five Finger Death Punch, Sleeping with Sirens, Whitechapel, Jinjer, and Disturbed.
