London-based lo-fi/bedroom pop artist April Jai returns with the ultimate song to send to your ex after they hit you up after things have ended. The moment being described is likely all too familiar to many of us – it’s a moment that leads to a lot of confusion and conflicting emotions. Yet there is also gracious clarity that comes when you realize that you’re just not hung up on your ex anymore when you can reflect on what happened and let it go.

April released her debut EP The Last Goodbye in 2017 and it reached #2 on iTunes. Since then, she has been steadily touring through the UK and Europe as she continues to grow her fanbase. Her follow-up single, “Back Again,” was released in early 2020 and she has entered 2021 with a new sound, slowly unveiled through her singles released so far this year. Her previous single, “Me Too,” was a hopeful and cathartic expression of past trauma.

She now returns with “Chose To Stay,” a song in the same vein of her newly established lo-fi/bedroom pop singer/songwriter artistic expression. The haunting, yet forceful, vocals capture the mix of emotions. There’s a sense of nostalgia for what used to be, but the satisfaction of what is new and beyond the past is more prominent. The multi-layered production wraps up the emotions and lyrics into a pleasant sounding package. The guitar and piano instrumentals mixed in with shaky synths create a dazzling atmosphere for the delicate vocals and firm lyrics. Despite the memories that may be there, the lyrics clearly indicate that the past is the past. When someone pushes you away, you should take that to heart and move forth with your life.
